How Does It Work?
Hannah’s dog grooming business was doing so well that she’d leased out bigger premises in a more central part of town.
She wanted me to help her redesign her logo and give the new shop a spruce up before it’s official opening day. Here’s what happened…

The Starting Point
The existing logo artwork & branding
The Brief
Hannah wanted the new logo to look more like her own dog - a Welsh rare breed terrier called ‘Danzig’. She gave me a bunch of photos as a reference, like this one.
Logo Development
I sent rough sketches to Hannah, she gave me feedback and we got to the final vector logo design with one round of revisions.
Sign Painting Process
With measurements of the fascia above her shop, I create to-scale vector design & send to Hannah for sign off
3. Tracing, stenciling, chalking…
3. Focusing, breathing and painting it on…
4. Finish with a large Danzig painted onto the window, and some paw prints to tie it all together
Gold Leaf Gilding
Christine - a herbalist with over 20 years experience - was opening a new store in town.
She’d seen my signwork locally and wanted me to help her create something that was enduring and classic, harking back to the apothecaries of old.
I suggested we go for gilding (the gold leaf is weatherproof and will outlast the wood it’s painted on) and romanesque lettering.

Prepare
Practising with the fascia paint, gold leaf & glue.
Gilding
Waiting for the right weather conditions and then chalking up the design (stencil), hand painting on the glue & waiting for the right drying time to apply the gold leaf.
Finishing Touches
A follow up visit to touch up any patches where the gold leaf didn’t take, and repainting any damaged areas on the backing wood.
And - voila!
