How Does It Work?

Hannah’s dog grooming business was doing so well that she’d leased out bigger premises in a more central part of town.

She wanted me to help her redesign her logo and give the new shop a spruce up before it’s official opening day. Here’s what happened…

The Starting Point

The existing logo artwork & branding

Business card for Mütley Crü Dog Groomers with a purple background, stylized text, and a cartoon dog with a black eye patch and skeletal bones.

The Brief

Hannah wanted the new logo to look more like her own dog - a Welsh rare breed terrier called ‘Danzig’. She gave me a bunch of photos as a reference, like this one.

Photo of a black and white fluffy terrier dog with a beard, standing on rocks outdoors with trees and a blue sky in the background.

Logo Development

I sent rough sketches to Hannah, she gave me feedback and we got to the final vector logo design with one round of revisions.

Sketches of various dog faces in different expressions and styles, some are simple line drawings and others are more detailed, with a few colored in pink.

The shop has large front windows with holiday-themed decorations, including a neon sign of a dog with a rainbow collar, paisley snowflakes, and a reindeer silhouette. The shop's sign has a bone icon between the words.

Sign Painting Process

  1. With measurements of the fascia above her shop, I create to-scale vector design & send to Hannah for sign off

Shadow of the word 'MUTTLEY' cast on a wall with a person holding a rolled-up tracing paper on the right.
Projection of a sign for dog groomers with a picture of two crossed bones.

3. Tracing, stenciling, chalking…

Shadow of a person's face and hand making a peace sign, cast onto projection with letters "MUTT"

3. Focusing, breathing and painting it on…

Tracing paper with the words "MÜTTLEY CRÜE" above storefront windows, with some graffiti-style drawings of bones and a crossbones symbol on a white background.

4. Finish with a large Danzig painted onto the window, and some paw prints to tie it all together

Gold Leaf Gilding

Christine - a herbalist with over 20 years experience - was opening a new store in town.

She’d seen my signwork locally and wanted me to help her create something that was enduring and classic, harking back to the apothecaries of old.

I suggested we go for gilding (the gold leaf is weatherproof and will outlast the wood it’s painted on) and romanesque lettering.

Design

Creating the lettering

Sketches of letter designs, including the words 'MEDICINE' with some letters colored in purple, on a desk surrounded by art supplies and a cutting mat.
A crafting workspace with a green cutting mat, an open bottle of pink ink and a brush, with a pencil drawing of the letter 'C' in large romaneque font on white paper.
Hand-drawn letters on paper spell out "HERBAL MEDICINE CLINIC" on a green cutting mat.

Prepare

Practising with the fascia paint, gold leaf & glue.

A green wooden sign with gold-coloured glue, painted in the shape of letters 'H I', resting on a cutting mat with art supplies around, including paints, brushes, and sketches.

Gilding

Waiting for the right weather conditions and then chalking up the design (stencil), hand painting on the glue & waiting for the right drying time to apply the gold leaf.

A woman with curly blonde hair, glasses, and yellow tape around her wrist is pressing onto a stencil, printed paper pinned to the wooden board above a shop. The sign reads 'HERBAL' in large letters, with other letters partially visible.
A green wooden surface with two pieces of masking tape and white chalk marks and faint lettering of 'H' 'E'
Green storefront with a 'MEDICINE' stencil sign taped on the window and brush-strokes painted above it.

Finishing Touches

A follow up visit to touch up any patches where the gold leaf didn’t take, and repainting any damaged areas on the backing wood.

And - voila!
